The projections for physician shortages are dire with little relief in sight. According to the Center for Workforce Studies of the Association of American Medical Colleges, there will be a shortage of 45,000 primary care physicians and 46,000 surgeons and medical specialists in the next decade. By 2015 we will be short 61,000 physicians to meet the demands of our aging population. Primary care doctors and those specialists who treat older adults will be the most sought after and the most difficult to recruit.
